A man appeared in Waterford District Court last week after being caught in possession of cocaine and alprazolam tablets at the Tesco Poleberry carpark in Waterford city.

During the District Court hearing last Tuesday at Waterford Courthouse, the court heard that on January 2, 2024, gardaí observed suspicious behaviour from 31-year-old Ismail Ahmed, with an address at 7 Orchard Drive, Ursuline Court, Waterford city.

Gardai found 60 tablets of alprazolam and €280 worth of cocaine, contained in five individual bags, in his possession at the Tesco carpark.

He was charged with two counts of possessing a controlled drug contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Ismail Ahmed's defence solicitor, Kenneth Cunningham, said that his client works full time and has no other offending matters pending before the court.

He has two previous convictions, for a misuse of drugs offence and for having no insurance.

Presiding over the court hearing last week, Judge John Cheatle, ordered Ismail Ahmed to pay a €250 fine for the possession of cocaine.

The charge of possessing alprazolam tablets was taken into consideration.
