Man appears in court after being arrested for his own safety

A man who attempted to get in the back of a garda patrol car was arrested for his own safety, Waterford District Court has heard.

Timurs Vandisevs (54), of 23 Briot Close, Templars Hall, Waterford, was before Judge Kevin Staunton at Waterford District Court.

Garda Aaron Kelly told the court that he attended a call to a residence and met the defendant on the road outside.

The defendant stumbled toward the vehicle and tried to get in the back, asking if gardaí were there for him.

Garda Kelly said the man admitted to drinking and, “given the nature of the call”, he decided to arrest the defendant for his own safety.

Judge Staunton applied Section 1.1 of the Probation of Offenders Act 1907.
