Man (30) punched Garda officer in the mouth, Waterford District Court heard
Judge Staunton wished the defendant well in his future journey of recovery.
A 30-year-old Waterford man appeared in Waterford District Court for an assault he committed on a Garda officer. He was also sentenced for two separate assault matters that took place at a local supermarket.
Dean Flynn, of McGuire House, Waterford, punched a Garda officer in the mouth on October 4, 2025, causing his lip to split. He was charged with assault causing harm.
For a separate incident that took place at Tesco, Poleberry, on June 18, 2025, Flynn was charged with two counts of assault. The court was told that on this day, Flynn pushed a man up against store shelving and kicked him.
His solicitor, Ken Cunningham, said that Flynn has little recollection of the incidents due to being in a “catatonic mental health episode” at the time.
Mr. Flynn is currently an inpatient at the Central Mental Hospital in Portrane, County Dublin.
His family spoke to Judge Staunton during court proceedings, pleading with him to grant supports to Flynn.
The man’s family members said, “he needs to be somewhere to get the support he needs” and “you can’t just release him out onto the street”.
Judge Staunton said he is “very aware” of Mr Flynn and wished him well in his future journey of recovery.
For the incidents of assault at Tesco, he was sentenced to a total of eight months' imprisonment. For assaulting the garda officer, he received 10 months, which was suspended for a period of 12 months.
