A Belfast based theatre company are bringing a major new Irish-language translation of a George Bernard Shaw political comedy classic to Waterford this Friday.
The Aisling Ghéar Theatre Company have been taking Pygmalion 26 on tour across the country this autumn. The production is a revisiting of My Fair Lady as a modern-day Irish language production based in a modern Belfast City.
The production will include surtitles for non-Irish speaking audience members.

Commenting on the showing of Pygmalion at Garter Lane in Waterford, Artistic Director for Aisling Ghéar, Bríd Ó Gallchóir, said the show brings together a wealth of talent and excellence across acting and the Irish language, through a beautiful production which reimagines Pygmalion in the context of contemporary Irish language and identity.
“We are so excited to bring Pygmalion 26 to audiences across Ireland, including the wonderful city of Waterford, where we will be visiting Garter Lane on 30 October, having toured Mullingar, Galway and Cork.
"This production positions Pygmalion not only as a theatre event, but as a wider cultural conversation connecting language, identity and modern Irish life, and we are really excited to visit Waterford and see the cast bring the show which is written by the wonderful Nuala Ni Neill, to life.”
Executive Director, Síle Penkert from Garter Lane, Waterford, added; “It is so fitting to have a full mainstage production entirely as Gaeilge visit Waterford given the city’s proximity to such a strong Irish speaking community. We are delighted to welcome Aisling Ghéar with Pygmalion 26 bringing the Irish language to an even-wider audience”.
Pygmalion 26 takes place at Garter Lane Theatre on Friday October 30 at 8pm. Tickets are available at garterlane.ie
Following on from Waterford, the production will tour extensively across venues in Ireland, including Belfast, Donegal and Belfast.
