Waterford councillors say no to single-use plastics

A number of councillors in the Dungarvan/Lismore district have decided to not use posters in their local election campaigns.

Cllr John Pratt said, “During the last local elections we were contacted by nearly all the Tidy Towns groups in our areas regarding posters.

“It was one of the few poster free areas at that time. Nobody put up posters and it worked out really well. We’re two months out from the elections, and I’m putting it out there again that it’s something we should consider.”

Cllrs Declan Doocey and Seamus O’Donnell also said they would not be using posters this year.

Cllr Damien Geoghegan added, “I didn’t use posters at the last local elections, and I won’t be using them this time. I think the local electoral areas are small enough where the public know who the candidates are.

“We talk as a council about reducing single use plastics, so when we do get the chance to do that I think we should follow up on it.”

Cllrs recently discussed the use of election posters during a monthly meeting held at the Civic Offices in Dungarvan.
