Is investment in cycle lanes paying off?

At a recent meeting of Comeragh district councillors, ongoing investment in cycle lanes was questioned.
At the meeting, Waterford Council engineers said that the amount of funding that the Council has been granted for road strengthening is inadequate to maintain the network.
Cllr John O’Leary asked whether investing in cycle lanes is really paying off given that roads cannot be maintained:
“There's a huge amount of money being invested in cycle lanes and we’re talking here this morning of wanting more money for roads here in the Comeragh district in relation to refurbishment" he said.
“The one thing I get asked from an awful lot of constituents is about cycle lanes.
"There is no evidence in rural areas of the amount of people cycling. I do not see cyclists. Unless it comes to pass, I do not see where this huge investment is paying off.”
