Ireland will assume the Presidency of the European Union in July and will remain at the helm until December 2026.

A key element of this Presidency is the delivery of a culture programme across Ireland and the EU Member States.

Delivered by Culture Ireland, the culture programme is the most citizen-facing and public element of the Presidency and offers an opportunity to showcase the best of Irish arts and culture, both traditional and contemporary.

Each county is “paired” with a specific Member State of the EU for the period of the Presidency.

Waterford is pleased to be paired with Denmark.

With that in mind the Arts Office of Waterford City & County Council is now seeking expressions of interest from writers based within its administrative area to produce a literary response to the connection between the rich folklore of both countries and shared Norse roots.

A spokesperson for the local authority said writers are asked to outline in a short document what subject matter they propose to cover with an overview of what they propose to produce.

They are asked to submit their expression of interest, in hard copy only, to : EU Presidency Literature Opportunity, c/o Margaret Organ/Arts Officer, Waterford City & County Council, Civic Offices, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford.

The closing date for submissions is 12 noon on Friday, July 10. Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their response and may be required to give further information.

Decisions will issue in late July and the selected writers will have up to October 2026 to produce the work. Three bursaries of €900 each will be available for this work, which will also have a public-facing element in Waterford during the European Year of the Normans in 2027.

Funded by the Local Democracy Scheme
