Waterford exhibition explores fashion, waste and climate action
The exhibition will go on display from September 18
On September 18, Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Liam Brazil, will officially launch Material World, an exhibition exploring fashion, waste and climate action.
The exhibition will encourage people to think differently about how clothing is produced, consumed, and discarded.
At the heart of the exhibition is a striking globe sculpture created entirely from reclaimed textiles, highlighting the environmental impact of the fashion industry while inspiring positive action through repair, reuse and upcycling.
Through displays and interactive elements, visitors will discover how everyday choices around clothing can help reduce waste, conserve resources and support climate action.
In addition to a school’s programme, members of the public are particularly encouraged to attend a special evening workshop on Wednesday September 23 at 6pm.
The workshop is designed to bring the exhibition’s themes to life through practical demonstrations, creative activities and discussion.
The workshop will provide participants with simple, achievable ways to reduce textile waste, extend the life of clothing and make more sustainable fashion choices.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Liam Brazil, said: “Textile waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world, and many people are unaware of the environmental impact associated with the clothes we buy and discard.
"Material World is an innovative and engaging exhibition that encourages us all to think more carefully about our consumption habits and the role we can play in creating a more sustainable future.
"I am delighted to launch this important initiative and encourage people of all ages to visit the exhibition and take part in the workshop programme," the Mayor added.
Waterford City and County Council’s Environment Awareness Officer, Ella Ryan, added: “Every year, thousands of tonnes of textiles are discarded, many of which could be reused, repaired or repurposed."
"Material World helps people understand the connection between fashion, waste and climate change while providing practical ideas that can be incorporated into everyday life," she said.
“The exhibition shows that small actions, when taken collectively, can lead to meaningful environmental change," she added.
Material World will be on display at Waterford Central Library, Lady Lane from September 18 to September 28, before moving to Dungarvan Library, Davitt’s Quay until October 5.
