On Saturday last, a group of local artists hit the streets of Waterford for a performance based drag day dubbed “Blaasification".
Blaasification is a performative drag day exploring the concept of 'chosen family', a term in the LGBTQ+ community that encapsulates the family queer people build amongst themselves. Chosen families can be a critical support system, based on mutual love, understanding and support.
Blaasification is about expressing queer friendship and chosen family values under the public eye, as well as taking drag, an art form often reserved for hidden and underground spaces, and projecting it to the public under daylight.
The day was about spreading colour and whimsy to the streets of Waterford, simply to cheer people up and spread joy in a particularly dark time of year. Locals walking the streets were delighted to come across the spectacle, bringing an unexpected moment of cheer and vibrancy to their day.
The participants of this round of Blaasification were local artists Rhys Wallace and Caoilfhionn Hanton, alongside local drag house, known as the 'Haus of Goofy', which is composed of Queenn Marie, who is pictured in the photo wearing pink, Orchid, wearing purple, and Una Live, wearing black and white.
