Stagemad Theatre Company continues its collaboration with The Coastguard Cultural Centre, Tramore, to bring a compelling and dramatic adaptation of a pivotal moment in Tramore's history.

The production takes to the stage for three nights only, bringing to life the true story of the fateful night of January 6, 1921, when volunteers from the IRA's East Waterford Brigade and the West Waterford flying column confronted British troops near Tramore during the Irish War of Independence.

The ambush was conceived by Paddy Paul, the leader of the IRA East Waterford Brigade at the time.

He gathered volunteers from around the local area, including from within Waterford City units, and also members of the West Waterford flying column led by George Lennon.

The play traces the volunteers' perilous journey, from the secret mobilisation at an arms dump, culminating in the dramatic confrontation with forty British troops, an event that ultimately claimed the lives of two IRA volunteers, Michael McGrath and Thomas O'Brien.

On the British side, one soldier and one Black and Tan, were also injured.

Stagemad's James Power spoke recently about the production saying: "Our aim is to bring to life the events of the fateful night through the eyes and ears of survivor Nicholas Whittle. "This is part of Tramore's history, the production is a tribute to the local Volunteers involved."

Stagemad Theatre Company are South East Cultural Award Winners, along with being recipients of a Waterford News & Star Green Room Award for outstanding theatrical event, best play and best director.

The event takes place nightly, from Friday, April 24 to Sunday, April 26 at 8pm nightly.
