Waterford City and County Council has been awarded €564,000 from the Climate Action Fund.

The local allocation was announced by Waterford TD and Minister of State John Cummins, who welcomed the funding, saying it will empower and support the building of low-carbon communities.

“This is a significant investment in the power of local communities to lead on climate action.

"We know real change happens when people are supported to take action in their own towns and villages,” said Minister Cummins.

This funding is part of the Community Climate Action Programme.

The programme supports projects and initiatives that facilitate community climate action through education, capacity building and learning by doing.

Phase one of strand one saw €24 million allocated to support 650 community climate action projects across the country.

Today’s allocation was phase 2 of the programme, with funding provided from the CAF to all local authorities to partner with community groups to run projects that will contribute to national climate and energy targets.

Community projects eligible for this guidance and potential funding will address the following five themes:

  • Community energy
  • Travel
  • Food and waste
  • Shopping and recycling
  • Local climate and environmental action

“Fine Gael has always believed in empowering communities, and this programme is a perfect example of how local ambitions can be supported.

“All community groups should engage with their local authority to make full advantage of the support available,” said Minister Cummins.
