'Grave concerns' for man as mental health services overwhelmed
Judge Paula Murphy directed that the Government carry out an assessment and evaluation of the situation.
A man appeared in court last week in relation to an alleged incident where he made threats to kill whilst in a store in Waterford in December 2025.
He allegedly made threats to kill at Sara Technology on Broad Street, contrary to Section 5 of the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act.
The man, of no fixed abode, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Waterford District Court via video link in relation to the matter last week.
The court expressed “grave concerns” over his mental health and his solicitor requested that a psychiatric team assist the man.
His solicitor further added that a member of the man’s family instructed him that the mental health supports, which are available, are currently overwhelmed.
Judge Paula Murphy directed that the Government carry out an assessment and evaluation of the situation, given the concerns raised by the man’s family.
The man was remanded in custody until March 3.
