The brawl led to the referee having to abandon the game

A Garda investigation is under way following an incident that occurred at an under age hurling match in County Waterford on Monday, July 15, that led to the game being abandoned.

A mass brawl broke out on the pitch involving players, mentors and some spectators and a spokesperson for the Gardaí confirmed to Waterford News & Star that an investigation is now under way.

"A statement of complaint has been made by an individual who was at that match," said the Garda spokesperson.

"The matter is being investigated by Waterford Gardaí," she added.

The U15 championship match between Ballygunner and Na Risigh in Mount Sion, had to be abandoned after mentors and some spectators went on to the pitch.

Video footage of the incident was circulated widely on social media and in it a large number of people could be seen gathered on the pitch. At one point in the footage it appeared one of the players attempted to move an adult away from the melee when another adult ran towards them and appeared to strike the adult, who then fell to the ground.

Another part of the footage appeared to show one of the players lying on the ground with nobody tending to him, while the fracas continued around him.

It’s expected that Waterford GAA and Bord no nOg will also be investigating the circumstances around the incident and it’s also expected the referee’s report will contain details of the incident, as is normal procedure.
