Gambling regulation measures welcomed in Waterford

Minister Mary Butler has welcomed the passing of the Gambling Regulation Bill
The passing of the Gambling Regulation Bill through both houses of the Oireachtas has been welcomed in Waterford.
The passing of the Bill, which is aimed at streamlining, strengthening and modernising gambling regulation was welcomed by Minister for Mental Health & Older People, Mary Butler TD, who said it will be very beneficial for mental health.
“The Bill introduces a modern and robust licencing and regulatory framework for both in-person and online gambling in Ireland for the first time," she told Waterford News & Star.
Describing the passing of the Bill as "a landmark achievement" for her party colleague, Minister James Browne, she said it fundamentally transforms gambling in Ireland, putting the safety, mental health and well-being of citizens first".
"For far too long, our gambling laws have not been fit for purpose, failing to take account of the fact people have instant access to casinos in their pockets with their smartphones," said Minister Browne.
Commenting that the gambling industry continues to evolve, particularly in terms of ads and sponsorships, she said it disproportionally affects vulnerable groups, "especially children and those at risk".
"The passing of this legislation marks a significant public health victory and delivers real accountability to the industry," said Minister Butler.
"The Bill provides for the establishment and operation of the National Gambling Exclusion Register and introduces tight restrictions on the advertisement of gambling activities," she added.
The Bill also provides for the creation of a Social Impact Fund to support awareness–raising and educational measures and to support problem gambling treatment activities. With regard to black market operators, the Bill contains a suite of measures to address illegal or criminal gambling activity and includes explicit prohibitions on illegal activity or practices, some of which could result in significant custodial sentences.
"I am delighted to welcome the passage of the Bill, particularly as it is aimed at protecting our citizens from gambling harm, including younger people and those more vulnerable in our communities," said Minister Butler.
