Government Chief Whip & Minister for Mental Health, Mary Butler TD has confirmed that €601,193.44 has been allocated for project works in County Waterford under the 2026 Local Authority Marine Infrastructure Scheme.

This annual scheme supports capital investment in coastal infrastructure owned by local authorities, including pier and harbour repairs, slipway upgrades, safety enhancements, and the development of marine leisure amenities.

The projects that will receive funding include: Dungarvan Harbour Wall repair of the slipway - €187,500; Abbeyside Sea Wall repair - €187,500; Helvick Pier ladders and concrete repairs - €50,010.94; Ardmore Sea Wall repairs - €56,182.50 and Boatstrand Harbour Access, ladders and lifting hoist - €120,000.

Commenting on the funding, Minister Butler complimented her Government colleague, Minister of State with responsibility for Fisheries at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Timmy Dooley TD, for announcing the funding.

She also praised him for "his keen awareness" of the importance of marine infrastructure to coastal communities in Waterford such as Dungarvan, Abbeyside, Helvick, Ardmore, the Copper Coast and more.

"These funding allocations will drive measurable upgrades to essential marine infrastructure in Waterford’s coastal communities," said Minister Butler.

"It is essential that we continue to support local aquaculture, fishing, and tourism sectors through strategic capital investment," she added.

She said the aforementioned sectors were a combined core driver of economic sustainability within rural and coastal areas.

"I also want to commend the constructive and detailed engagement undertaken by Waterford City & County Council, and coastal community stakeholders, which was instrumental in securing this funding," she said.

In February, Minister Dooley announced €4.33 million in national funding for the 2026 scheme.

The announcement today (Wednesday, May 20) increased the allocation to €4.8 million, providing funding for 57 nationwide projects.

Minister Butler said it reflected the active involvement of the local authorities and "the wholehearted commitment of Government in supporting coastal communities".

“Following today's announcement, it is crucial that works commence without delay," she said.

"The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will collaborate closely with Waterford City & County Council to ensure a smooth rollout and complete utilization of the funding within the current year," she added.

"Timely project delivery is essential to maximize the benefits for the local economies and industries that depend on this marine infrastructure."

Local authorities have until October 31, to complete all works and submit their claims to the department.
