Fresh updates on the expansion of local Greenways
Part of the South East Greenway.
At this month's Piltown Municipal District meeting, Kilkenny County Council officials delivers uodates on the various Greenway projects that are being undertaken in Waterford and the further south east region.
The opening of the section of Greenway connecting to the North Quays is dependent on the completion of an area within the North Quay’s development.
Once available, the southern end of the Greenway will be accessed via the North Quays/Abbey Road intersection, and a small temporary Greenway trailhead car park will also be made available within the North Quay’s development.
“The Greenway team continue to engage with Waterford City & County Council in relation to a completion date for the above and the most recent advice is mid-April 2026” a statement from Kilkenny County Council said.
Meanwhile, detailed design of the remaining section of the Greenway between Curraghmore and Ballyverneen, which is approximately 9km, continues to be progressed by consultants.
“The landowner liaison team continues to engage with affected landowners along this section to agree final design layouts and accommodation works.”
A Design Team have commenced work on the detailed design including procurement of various surveys regarding the Greenway link to Glenmore. This will connect the Southeast Greenway with Glenmore village in county Kilkenny.
“As the detailed design progresses, discussions with the affected landowners will continue regarding the acquisition of land.”
Efforts are also continuing to identify potential funding streams to advance the Greenway link to Slieverue. The southern section of this link received Part 8 planning in January 2025, and efforts to accrue funding have been ongoing.
A second Public Consultation on proposed route corridors for the Woodstock Greenway link is now scheduled for late March 2026. Landowner engagement is continuing, and following consultation and landowner engagement, a Preferred Route Corridor Option will be proposed.
