Greenway to New Ross from Waterford 'a bit away' from opening

Waterford Greenway approaching Waterford Suir Valley Railway which is fully open. The South East Greenway between Waterford and New Ross, however, is currently only open at one section.

Councillor Mary Roche asked the Metropolitan District Council about access to the South East Greenway at a recent meeting.

Regarding the greenway, she said, “there seems to be some sort of hold up even to get access from the Ferrybank end.”

She continued, “I know that the whole thing won’t open until the bridge opens," but she wondered if it would be possible for people in Ferrybank to have access to the Ferrybank to New Ross section of the Greenway.

Council Executive Michael Murphy explained that there are six sections on the Waterford to New Ross Greenway. The one in New Ross is built and the section closest to Waterford is built but the middle sections are not built.

“There’s quite a bit of work to do before we get to the stage where you can go from New Ross into Waterford.”

He added, “It’s also complicated by the fact that one of the sections on the North Quays is privately owned.”

He concluded, “It’s a bit away yet to finish that link, unfortunately.”
