Foot pursuit between gardaí and suspect in Waterford city leads to arrest
Whilst running from gardaí, the defendant threw a package over a wall, which was later recovered.
On February 8, 2026, in the Avondale area of Waterford city, gardaí saw a man engaging in a suspicious transaction.
The man was Jamie Merriman (22), of 5 Asgard Grove, Grange Manor, Waterford City.
Upon seeing gardaí, Merriman fled, and a foot pursuit commenced.
Whilst running from gardaí, Merriman threw a package over a wall, which was later recovered.
The package contained €600 of cannabis.
A follow-up search at the man’s residence led to the seizure of an additional small quantity of cannabis.
The man has no previous convictions; however, he was previously ordered to pay a sum to the Court Poor Box to avoid a conviction for selling cannabis.
Judge John Cheatle put the matter back to February 2027. If Merriman comes to no further adverse garda attention between now and then, he will be assessed for community service and avoid a prison sentence.
