Gardaí on patrol in the south east of the country discovered a firearm, ammunition and drugs in a car after the driver attempted to escape on foot.

The incident occurred in County Wexford in the early hours of Tuesday morning, June 9.

A spokesperson for the force said Gardaí were on patrol in Enniscorthy when they observed a vehicle at a roundabout at Scarawalsh, which is just outside the town.

The driver failed to stop when directed to do so by the Gardaí and he subsequently fled the scene, driving erratically towards Enniscorthy.

"During the course of this incident, the driver proceeded to ram the patrol car," said the spokesperson.

"The driver, a man in his 30s, attempted to escape on foot and was apprehended by Gardaí at the scene," he added.

The man was taken to Wexford General Hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí seized the vehicle and searched it, during which they recovered a .32 auto pistol, four rounds of ammunition, approximately €40,000 worth of controlled drugs and cash in excess of €8,000.

"Several other weapons were also seized, along with a number of mobile phones," said the spokesperson.

The driver of the vehicle was released from hospital and arrested, and taken to a Garda station in the Division where he is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against State Act, 1939.

Investigations are ongoing.
