Estates in Waterford city will be dark this winter unless lighting issue is resolved

New public lights in some Waterford city estates have not been switched on, and the ESB are under pressure to do so.

Speaking on the issue last week, Independent councillor David Daniels said that the Council have installed suitable lighting infrastructure in housing estates. However, the ESB have not yet activated them.

“We’ll be heading back into winter soon. The nights will be starting to close in and estates will be dark" Cllr Daniels said.

He asked Waterford Council to put pressure on the ESB to make good on the delays.

"We have incurred the cost by putting the infrastructure in and they are sitting there not switched on

“Its unfair to the residents and unfair to the Council, because I think we‘re taking unnecessary criticism when it’s the ESB who haven’t turned the lights on."

Waterford City and County Council Director of Services, Gabriel Hynes, said there is a period of time before ESB can provide connections.

“We are in contact with them and they are aware of our priorities, but they under considerable pressure to deliver the connections” Mr. Hynes said.
