“Don’t we have enough museums?”
Calls were made this week for a dedicated maritime museum in Waterford city.
Cllr Seamus Ryan said Waterford appears to be the only port city in the country that does not have a maritime museum.
A permanent Maritime Gallery is currently being developed within Waterford Treasures.
Cllr Ryan said however he would like to see a permanent, dedicated museum which celebrates Waterford’s maritime history.
In response to Cllr Ryan’s comments, Waterford Council Director of Services Michael Quinn said: “Don’t we have enough museums?”
“We do have a very strong maritime heritage, and we did previously ask to look at trying to present that more appropriately. The starting point that is achievable is to create an enhanced maritime element within our existing museums.”
Mr. Quinn said adding a dedicated maritime museum to Waterford’s museum offering can be put onto the agenda for future regeneration projects, however it will be a complicated process.
“To identify a building, procure development costs etc, there is a lot of work required.”
