Mayor Murphy told those gathered it was his honour to host the class of 'Hub Stars' and celebrate their achievements.

“To the dedicated staff, to the incredible children who inspire us all, and to their families, I want to extend my deepest gratitude.

“Your efforts are shaping lives, creating opportunities, and building bridges that will help these children integrate successfully into mainstream education and beyond,” said Mayor Murphy.

The mayor described the work at the autism class as “pioneering” and said it was important to ensure an equality in education that meets students' needs and is in line with legislation.

“Thank you for all that you do and for reminding us of the power of education, compassion, and collaboration in making a difference,” said Mayor Murphy.

Following the mayoral speech, teacher Elaine Walsh gave a presentation on the hub's projects.

Student at the hub, Billy said the hub had helped him when he was struggling in school. He “flew under the radar”, he said.

He visited the hub for chair yoga.

“It is the best thing in the school. It has helped me unfathomably. I have nothing but gratitude and appreciation for everyone in the hub. It has been the best thing ever, honestly,” said Billy.

Former hub pupil and journalism student Alex said he too struggled in school but after attending the hub he felt a huge improvement in himself.

The hub was introduced when he was in transition year and last year he completed his Leaving Certificate.

“If the hub hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t have been able to do it.

“I am really happy it is here for you lads,” said Alex.

Aaron said he was able to improve his grades with the support of the hub and his Special Needs Assistant.

“Everyone in the hub is amazing,” said Aaron.

Joe said he moved from St Paul’s Community College to De La Salle in 2023, and he said the hub had helped him.

“Thank you to the teachers and staff for getting me this far. You support me and I support you,” said Joe.

Mayor Murphy said he very much enjoyed the presentation by Ms Walsh but more so the testimonials from the boys.

“You are making fantastic progress, all of you, and you will make great contributions to society," said Mayor Murphy.
