A call has been made in County Waterford for the Government to act immediately to support An Post and eir pensioners.

Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, Deputy David Cullinane, attended a protest outside the Dáíl on Tuesday, February 11, in support of the aforementioned pensioners who are still waiting on agreed pension increases.

Deputy Cullinane said he met former workers and pensioners from Waterford at the protest demanding urgent government action on the matter.

“I was proud to stand with An Post and eir pensioners outside the Dáil today, including former workers from Waterford who are rightly angry and frustrated at the continued delay in paying pension increases that were already agreed," he said, in the wake of the event on Tuesday.

“These pensioners gave decades of service and upheld a vital public service, yet they are being left in limbo while ministers drag their heels," he added.

"With the cost of living continuing to rise, this delay is causing real and unnecessary hardship."

Deputy Cullinane said an agreement was brokered with unions on the matter, including the CWU, and he said: "It is reasonable, it is fair, and it must now be honoured without further delay."

“The failure of the Government to sign off on this settlement is unacceptable and risks undermining trust in public institutions," said Deputy Cullinane.

"Pensioners should not be made to pay the price for political inertia. Sinn Féin is calling for the Minister for Public Expenditure to finalise approvals and ensure the backdated payments and agreed increases are paid out immediately."

"These pensioners have waited long enough," he said.
"The Government must now confirm the timing and method of payment and deliver what is owed without any more excuses.”
