The Irish Catholic first reported Ave Maria University's interest in Mount Melleray Abbey in 2025.

Mount Melleray Abbey, a monastery in Cappoquin, is set to become an outpost for the American Catholic higher-level institution Ave Maria University.

Mount Melleray closed in January 2025 as the last remaining monks moved to Roscrea.

Ave Maria University, a Newman Guide Catholic University based in Florida, posted a video on its YouTube channel promoting its plans for the monastery.

“Starting Fall 2026, the Ave Maria University Ireland program officially opens at our Mount Melleray Abbey campus in County Waterford,” Ave Maria University said.

“Whether you're looking for academic excellence, breathtaking adventure, or a deeper connection to your Catholic faith, the Emerald Isle is calling.”

In August 2025, the Cistercians confirmed to The Irish Catholic that they were in discussions with a “like-minded community”.

‘Mount Melleray Abbey Trust’ are currently listed as the full owner of the lands.

Ave Maria University was established by Thomas Monaghan in 2007, the same man who founded Domino’s Pizza and formerly owned the Detroit Tigers baseball team.

The university seeks to provide academic learning through the lens of the Catholic faith.

An excerpt from Ave Maria University’s website reads: “Our academic programs are designed to foster a love of learning and a deep appreciation for the pursuit of truth.

“Whether you're studying biology, psychology, or finance, the truths of the faith are woven throughout.”
