Waterford Airport has not seen commercial flights since 2016.

Contracts between Waterford Airport and US oil billionaire Kelcy Warren have been officially signed, according to a message sent to board members of Waterford Airport by chairman Michael Walsh.

The contracts were first entered in December.

The purchase price of the transfer from Waterford Regional Airport Plc to Waterford Airport Ltd will be €1.5 million.

Waterford Airport Ltd, the new private airport company set up in 2025, will purchase the debtor list of Waterford Regional Airport Plc, the company that has governed the airport since its foundation in 1981.

All current liabilities will be discharged in the coming weeks.

Mr Walsh told members of the board that the purchase price had risen due to “extensive engagements” around the transfer.

The Waterford News & Star reported that Mr Warren had obtained Foreign Direct Investment approval three weeks ago.

A final Emergency General Meeting (EGM) will now be called for shareholders of Waterford Regional Airport Plc.

Shareholders will vote on whether to liquidate Waterford Regional Airport - a decision that was initially approved in December 2025.

Mr Walsh proposed a meeting of board members on Monday, March 16, in order to brief members on the elements of the business transfer deal and presumably organise a date for the EGM.

The extension of Waterford Airport’s runway is due to begin in April.
