Construction on new Millennium Plaza will commence this year

Following this morning's announcement of nearly half-a-million euro towards the regeneration of William Vincent Wallace Plaza, Waterford Council has confirmed that construction is scheduled to commence later this year, with completion anticipated early next year.
A statement from the local authority also confirmed that the renewed plaza will provide a 'flexible, year-round environment supporting social interaction, community activity, rest and informal recreation, events and performances.'
Originally developed as part of Waterford’s Millennium Projects, William Vincent Wallace Plaza, commonly known as Millennium Plaza, opened in 2001 and has served as public gathering space, performance venue and viewing point overlooking the River Suir for the past 25 years.
The plaza requires significant refurbishment, including upgrades to its surfacing, existing canopy, lighting infrastructure and public realm finishes.
The €465,000 project aims to address these physical requirements by turning the plaza into a greener, more accessible and people-centred civic space.
AIT Urbanism Landscape Architects have been appointed by the local authority as design consultants for the project.
