Major plans for upgrade of Millennium Plaza in city are unveiled

An allocation of €465,000 to refurbish the iconic William Vincent Wallace Plaza in Waterford City has been confirmed.

William Vincent Wallace Plaza, often referred to as the Millennium Plaza, has long served as a hard-landscaped civic landscape on the city’s quays.

While it has played an important role for events and gathering over its 25-year history, it will now be transformed into a greener, more inclusive and more welcoming public realm for the future.

The proposed upgrade aims for the plaza to become a people-centred space that prioritises comfort, accessibility and everyday use for all ages.

Announcing the funding allocation this morning, Waterford Minister of State for Planning & Local Government, John Cummins TD, said the area has been in need of a facelift for some time.

“The Plaza has been at the heart of our city for 25 years and in a time where the areas along our Quays are experiencing real positive change – it is also an opportunity to bring a new lease of life to existing infrastructure.

“It has been clear for some time that this area, which is in a prime location, next to some of our most well-known tourism assets, has needed a facelift so when I was approached by CEO Sean McKeown about the possibility of funding the project, I was delighted to be in a position to do so.”

Minister Cummins added that the renewed plaza will support social interaction, rest, play and community life, and will create a more vibrant civic destination.

“I have no doubt that these refurbishment works will have an extremely positive impact for many years to come” he said.
