Colm Tóibín and Michael Magee coming to Tramore for Waterford Libraries

Irish author Colm Tóibín

Acclaimed Irish authors Colm Tóibín and Michael Magee are coming to Tramore Library for a special appearance.

The pair are appearing as part of the The Art of Reading Book Club, organised in part by Ireland Libraries.

The Art of Reading Book Club is an initiative of the Arts Council and the Laureate for Irish Fiction, in partnership with Libraries Ireland.

Every month, Colm speaks with an author in front of a library audience.

Irish fiction

Colm is the author of many bestsellers including 'Brooklyn', 'Nora Webster' and 'The Blackwater Lightship'.

The current Laureate for Irish Fiction recently released his latest tome 'Long Island' earlier this year to glowing praise.

The Irish Times wrote: "He picks up the story of Eilis Lacey 20 years on from the end of Brooklyn and creates, if anything, an even richer, more minutely plotted pathway through the human heart and mind."

In June, he went to Dungarvan Library to talk about the book, inspiration and the creative process.

Michael Magee's debut novel 'Close to Home' won the the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature.

It was named as Waterstones' Irish Book of the Year, and was described as: "the unanimous choice for Irish Book of the Year by all the booksellers in Ireland, north and south"

Michael is also the editor of the Belfast-based literary magazine 'The Tangerine'.

Irish writers

Both authors approach Ireland, identity and culture in their own unique ways in writing, and are able to turn the specific into the universal.

They also weave their own personal history into story-telling, whether its Tóibín's portrayal of 1950's Wexford, or Magee's evocation of current-day Belfast.

Their date in Tramore is a must see event for anyone with even a passing interest in modern Irish books, history and culture.

The event takes place on Tuesday, September 24 at 7pm. For bookings and further information please contact Tramore Library on 051 849594.
