Cold snap could reach -3°C tonight

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow temperature and ice alert for tonight, warning that it will be "very cold" with temperatures dropping as low as -3°C or lower across parts of the country.

The national forecaster said that sharp to severe frost with icy stretches may form during the night from 8pm tonight, Tuesday December 10.

The warning is in place until 11 am tomorrow, Wednesday December 11.

The status yellow alert is in place across Waterford, Cork and Wexford as well as the rest of Munster. Parts of Connaught and Leinster will also be affected, including Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, and Westmeath.

The weather will be generally cold and dry tomorrow. Overnight mist and fog may be stubborn to clear in some areas of Munster with drivers warned to be careful on the roads. The highest temperatures expected tomorrow are from 2 to 6 degrees, in a light northeast breeze.

Wednesday night is likely to be another cold and frosty night with widespread fog and lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees.

The frost is expected to clear through Thursday morning, December 12. Expected to be a mostly dry and overcast day, patches of light rain may appear with temperatures maximums of between 2 and 7 degrees.
