Councillor Catherine Burke is ready to step into her new role as principal of Mount Sion primary this September, following the retirement of longstanding principal Michael Walsh.
The Bunmahon native has been teaching at Mount Sion since 2007 and became deputy principal of the school in 2018.
She said that following a rigorous interview process, her recent appointment as principal was a moment of “immense pride, excitement and a deep sense of responsibility”.
“My motivation stems from a deep commitment to the pupils, staff, and community of Mount Sion," she said, "I believe in the school’s potential to continue its legacy of excellence, and I am delighted to be part of shaping its future."

Catherine will of course be juggling the responsibilities of both principal of Mount Sion and local councillor, as she was recently elected to Waterford Council, representing Sinn Féin in the Portlaw/Kilmacthomas (Comeragh) LEA.
Her political duties have been underway since her election on June 7, during which time she has made representations in the council chamber regarding road repairs, housing issues, library facilities, Local Link transport and playground updates.
2024 will be a busy year as she balances both new roles. Reflecting on the overlap, she said to the Waterford News & Star: “Being elected to the council was an incredible honour, and being appointed as principal of Mount Sion Primary School in the same year was beyond my expectations.
“Leadership, communication, and strategic planning are skills I will bring to both roles. My experience in education has taught me the importance of empathy, collaboration, and decision-making, which are equally vital on the council."
Catherine was asked what she hopes to achieve as principal, to which she said she aims to integrate innovative teaching methods and foster a collaborative and inclusive teaching environment where every student and staff member feels supported.
“My vision for Mount Sion Primary School builds upon the strong foundations laid by our previous principal, Michael Walsh, whose dedication and leadership have shaped the school into the thriving community it is today," she said.
“Over the years, he has not only guided the school with a steady hand but has also instilled a culture of excellence and care that resonates throughout our community. His approach to leadership has set a standard that I deeply admire.
“As I step into this role, I am committed to upholding these values, ensuring that our school remains a place where every individual is respected, nurtured, and empowered to succeed.”
The new principal said she will be supported by a strong involvement and commitment from both the community of Mount Sion and staff of the school.
"Their unwavering support, dedication, and passion not only make Mount Sion a wonderful place to work and learn, but they also foster a sense of belonging and pride that permeates every aspect of school life.
"I am deeply committed to working alongside our exceptional team, building on the strong relationships and partnerships that have been cultivated over the years.
"Together, we will continue our shared mission of providing an education that not only equips our students with academic knowledge but also prepares them for life, instilling values that will guide them well beyond their time at Mount Sion," she added.
"It is through this collaborative spirit that we will ensure that our school remains a place of excellence, where every child can thrive, and each voice is valued."
