Bottle scheme yields €14,000 return in Waterford

The bottle return scheme has been a fantastic success in Waterford
Waterford Food Bank's innovative Bottle Return Scheme has been hailed as a great success yielding a €14,000 return between when it was launched in July 2024, and May, this year.
The scheme, which is an unfunded programme of Waterford Area Partnership, was launched in conjunction with Waterford Chamber.
However, a spokesperson for Waterford Area Partnership told Waterford News & Star, the scheme also served "as a shining example of community partnership and resourcefulness".
"By partnering with local businesses to collect and return recyclable bottles and cans, the Food Bank has generated an impressive €14,000," said the spokesperson. She said the initiative transcended simple fundraising and the money raised is directly used to purchase fresh, nutritious food – a crucial supplement to the weekly food parcels distributed to over 250 families. "This means families facing food insecurity receive a more balanced diet, including fresh meats, milk, bread, eggs, butter, and vegetables," she said. "A significant improvement in the quality and nutritional value of their weekly sustenance," she added. She also pointed out the enhanced support came at zero cost to the recipient families.
"The success of this program highlights the power of collaboration," she said, before adding: "The unwavering support and advocacy of the Waterford Chamber of Commerce have been instrumental in its success. This partnership demonstrates how collective action can address critical community needs in a creative and sustainable way."
Waterford Food Bank's bottle return scheme isn't just a feel-good story; it’s a blueprint for other areas grappling with food insecurity and showcases how resourceful initiatives can transform waste into vital resources, improving lives and fostering stronger community bonds.

"It’s a model worthy of emulation, and we commend the Food Bank and the Waterford Chamber for their vision and dedication" said the spokesperson.
