According to a recent audit carried out by Waterford City and County Council, there were 182 vacant Council houses for the year ending December 31st, 2024. That was an increase of 31 houses from 2023.
Twenty-three of those houses were vacant for more than two years.
The audit said: “Transfers of tenants between housing units impacts the vacancy rate and housing maintenance costs due to delays and refurbishment costs.”
In the audit, the Chief Executive, “Although 182 units were vacant at year-end, the majority comprised newly constructed dwellings that had only recently reached completion and were awaiting tenant occupation.
"Since then, all newly completed dwellings have been tenanted.
"The Council continues to actively reduce vacancy rates across its housing stock, ensuring that all works deliver value for money and meet optimal rental standards.
"The transfer of tenancies also plays an integral role in ensuring the most effective use of the Council’s housing stock.”
