Waterford's own Alice 'Lally' Doyle celebrated a milestone birthday at one of her favourite places to visit.

Alice marked being 90 years young at the People's Park, surrounded by her loving family and friends.

She was born Alice Whelan on Buttermilk Lane (now known as St Martin's Avenue), the youngest of 12 children; seven boys and four girls.

Alice was the only child who stayed in the Déise, as one by one, her siblings emigrated abroad to find opportunities, setting down roots in the UK including Kilburn, Stevenage and Liverpool.

She settled down with Tom 'Tommy' Doyle of Ballybricken, and they went on to have four sons and four daughters. Tragically, Alice lost three of her daughters to cancer.

Alice and family have kept strong ties with their relatives abroad and have had several big reunions both in the UK and here in The Granville Hotel, Waterford.

Party in the Park

Though now largely confined to a wheelchair, Alice keeps a lively, active life around Waterford City. Her children are heavily involved in her care, especially her son Brendan, who is her fulltime carer.

Most weekends she can be seen attending Masses in the Holy Trinity on Barronstrand St, and Ballybricken Parish Church.

While out and about, she likes to pop into the shops for a nosey, particularly Penney's.

The People's Park holds a special place for Alice, so when it came time to celebrate her 90th birthday, there was no better place for everyone to go and have fun.

On the day, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends came together at the Blue Butterfly Coffee Café where they enjoyed cupcakes and wished Alice a very happy birthday.
