Adelente ceremony to honour Déise men who fought Franco

The Waterford International Brigade fought against the fascist Franco regime.

In 1936, the men of the Waterford International Brigade took up arms to fight for democracy in the Spanish Civil War.

Today, Friday May 1, they are being celebrated for their bravery with the 'Adelente' ceremony in Waterford City.

At 5pm, a wreath will be laid at the Spanish Civil War Memorial at Cathedral Square to mark the 90th anniversary of the war.

Eoin Ronayne will give a talk in the Garden Room of the Medieval Museum at 5.30pm about the men's journey and the lessons that can be learned from their story.

At 6pm, Mayor of Waterford Seamus Ryan will unveil the commemorative plaque on Colbeck Street.

Attendees are then welcome to Jordan's bar for an evening of songs, poetry and spoken word.
