“A truly shocking state” – Calls made to deal with one of Dungarvan’s most prominent derelict buildings

The Old Pike Inn building at Killineeen just outside Dungarvan has been sat in dereliction for years.

The condition of the prominent building has been worsening, and this week calls were made to have it dealt with.

Speaking on the matter, Cllr Damien Geoghegan said that the building is “in a truly shocking state.”

“Nature has literally taken it over” he added.

“It’s been falling into worsening conditions over many, many years. We as a Council can’t talk about dereliction if we don’t deal with this one, because this is the worst one in our entire electoral area.

“It’s a prominent building, there were a number of extensions built on it over the years, half finished, never fully completed. Every time I pass it I’m astonished at its condition and nothing seems to be happening."

Cllr Thomas Phelan has shared the same sentiment, saying that he previously made a report to the gardaí following videos that were posted on social media showing skateboarders using the site.

“Nothing has happened with it, and its an awful shame because its detracting from what could be a very nice entrance point into Dungarvan” Cllr Phelan said.

Senior Planner Waterford City & County Council, Aisling O’Sullivan said the building is on the Council’s radar and it is listed on the Derelict Sites Register.

“There have been communications issued in relation to that property. I will revert back to the team and come back with an update” Ms. O’Sullivan said.

She added that the Council have been actively working on derelict sites in the Dungarvan area, with 126 sites currently being investigated.
