Your Fitness: Your are closer than you think!

The sad reality is a lot of people will give up on their fitness goals without realising how close they actually are to meeting national activity guidelines.

Health and fitness can seem like a far off destination for a lot of people. It can seem like a far off desire that you simply don’t have the resources to reach.

This might seem like an odd take to many reading this - but I get it. In our lives today health and fitness is evolving and becoming a bigger and more dominant part of people’s lives. Marathons seem to be on every month and there seems to be a Hyrox event taking place every other day!

Meanwhile, our social media is bombarded with health and fitness content, often by the elite individuals of the fitness sphere. Even to individuals involved in the fitness industry - this can seem overwhelming!

While there are many individuals out there providing content and advice to try and break down barriers to health and fitness, this can sometimes be doing the opposite when I reflect on how certain individuals may interpret it.

While the best advice will often come from the most advanced and reputable coaches and athletes - it can go over the heads of individuals unfamiliar with concepts discussed.

Therefore, an unrealistic expectation can be assumed and this may be a long way from a certain individual's starting point. As you can imagine, this can create a barrier as the individual perceives this as unrealistic and unreachable from their current starting point.

For an individual reading a post about trying to improve their 5k run time, knowing they can’t run a 5k in the first place.

An individual reading about the best gym split for building muscle or losing weight. An individual reading that they need to achieve at least 10,000 steps a day.

While these concepts have merit - they often fail to meet an individual's needs when it comes to health and fitness. The sad reality is a lot of people will give up on their fitness goals without realising how close they actually are to meeting our evidence-based national activity guidelines, which can be categorised as hitting 2.5 to five hours per week of moderate cardio (e.g. brisk walking) with at least two days of strength training per week.

Put simply - if you were to go for a brisk walk each day for 20-40 minutes and go to the gym just twice each week - you would be hitting what is deemed to be a sufficient level of health and fitness-orientated activity across the week.

What’s also important to note here is the fact that you might not be quite here yet. You can start with something smaller and work up to this.

Maybe that is one gym session per week and a 10-minute brisk walk each morning. Over time you can improve on this.

In my view - this can be a more positive message to be spreading to the wider population and showing them how close they are to achieving their health and fitness goals!
