Your Fitness: The biggest mistake people make
We need stimulus and an appropriate load to challenge the tissues and structures that are causing our pain and in some cases dysfunction.
The biggest mistake I see people make with their training when it comes to injury and pain... Considering this is my 200th time writing one of these articles, I thought it only fitting to discuss a topic I am deeply passionate about! And that is the role that movement and exercise plays in our health, wellbeing and overcoming pain and injury.
It happens to most of us at some point. We feel something go. We find ourselves in fight or flight. Our natural instinct is to rest and protect what we now believe is fragile and weak.
We stop moving as much. We stop training. We find ourselves avoiding activities that we previously enjoyed.
The reality? You are probably making things worse in the long run.
Like most things… rest is fine in moderation when it comes to injury/pain. But once all sinister pathology and the nature of your injury has been assessed by the relevant health professional… It’s time.
Time to get back to work. Back to doing what you can. Back to doing what you must. You might not be able to lift the same load as you were pre-injury. But there is no reason why you can’t get there again.
You might need to adjust training. But you must make an effort to ensure that you do not stop training.
Focus on what you can do and make sure to challenge the muscle groups you can train pain-free as normal.
With ranges/exercises that are causing pain/discomfort…modify and adapt - whether it’s reducing the weight, altering the range or simply holding an isometric. Stimulus is stimulus.
We need stimulus and an appropriate load to challenge the tissues and structures that are causing our pain and in some cases dysfunction.
If you’re not sure get advice - but ensure you stay active and find ways of staying fit and healthy as you rehab and adapt exercises to your needs.
Your body will likely thank you and what seemed like a setback could be one of the most empowering learning curves to figuring out what your body is truly capable of!
