Your Fitness: Ships are safe in harbour…
'Ships are safe in harbour, but that’s not what ships are built for.'
This week I had an interesting discussion about the relationship between discomfort and our health and fitness.
This was a man who had lost the confidence to come back into the gym due to a recent health diagnosis and had built up some anxiety about getting back into the gym. He was starting to lose hope in his ability, worried about what other people would think given certain limitations due to a disability he was also dealing with.
This got me thinking of a quote I heard many moons ago and I believe I cited this in one of my first ever articles. It went something like this... “Ships are safe in harbour, but that’s not what ships are built for.”
I remember this hitting me hard when I first came across it, and for some reason it always stuck with me during difficult times.
Reflecting on this conversation, it awoke similar emotions.
I reinforced the bravery this man had shown by showing up in the first place. This is no easy feat. I reassured him that anyone in a gym for the right reasons would have nothing but pure admiration for his dedication and determination to not let his disability take over his life, and it will more than likely be a moment of inspiration for those around him.
The hardest thing he did was take the first step. The rest has been amazing to watch.
Confidence in his ability to set up each exercise and the empowerment of seeing progressions in strength week to week.
For many this will be the ah-hah moment! They realise that stepping a little out of their comfort zone can be the start of something so much more!
Moments like this remind me why the health and fitness space can be such a rewarding place to work, grow and build relationships. Changing one life at a time!
