Your Fitness: Setting up for success
The most sustainable long-term changes you are chasing are often best acquired through small, consistent actions.
As we are now getting into the swing of things as we embrace the new year, many of us are likely opting to set ourselves some new challenges to work towards!
This is fantastic. It is great to have some exciting goals in mind when it comes to new year's, but it is even better to have some structure in place to help you get there.
Personally, I would start looking at what you normally do day-to-day. These are tasks that are normally done day-to-day within your life.
As you write these down, make a call on whether these tasks take you closer or farther away from your overall goal.
You can gradually look to remove some behaviours that are not aligned with your goal. Start to add some new tasks gradually into your daily routine. These can be as simple as planning your meals ahead for the day or adding a short walk before or after each meal.
One might even have a goal as simple as a glass of water with each meal. The key here is to look at what you already do - build on this!
Another underrated approach here can often be making sure you are making some time to do things you enjoy alongside this.
Whether this be time with your partner, kids or simply time to yourself to read that book you’ve been trying to catch up on or watch your favourite Netflix series.
Including some of these simple pleasures can make any changes you make so much more sustainable. Your health and wellbeing relies on more than just healthy eating and exercise - social connections and time to yourself is heavily linked with a better quality of life in my experience. Everyone’s idea of balance here but in most cases we will all benefit from a nice mix of both.
My last piece of advice - don’t feed into the new year's pressure to completely turn your lifestyle upside down! The most sustainable long-term changes you are chasing are often best acquired through small, consistent actions and gradual behaviour changes, which auto regulate to your overall goal. As I always say - make the plan fit around your life - not your life around the plan!
