Your Fitness: Exercise, a blessing or a curse?
The human body is amazing, and if you have the ability to train it to some degree - you are already winning.
Everybody is different, and that is what makes people so unique and interesting.
Different values and different perspectives offer the opportunity for new ideas to present themselves and help achieve some diversity among what would be a very narrow minded population.
I would now like to segway from this statement, while applying it to the world of health and fitness.
Everybody has a different opinion on exercise, some see it as a chore, while some see it more vital to life than oxygen.
My question is this - are we missing the point when it comes to our opinion and appreciation of exercise? Furthermore, our ability to exercise?
By now, you might be understanding my angle. I believe that there is an evident lack of appreciation for our ability to exercise. I understand this more and more, the older I get - and the more exposure I get to a variety of different populations.
Populations of people who would give anything to be in a position to physically go for a run, hit that gym session - or go out on that hike!
All around the world people are going through life-changing events, whether this be disease or disability, or even the detrimental effects of war and poverty. If you have access to a gym or simply a place to safely workout - you are doing very well in this world and this shouldn't be disregarded so lightly.
As cliché as this statement may sound, “If exercise was a pill, it would be the most widely prescribed pill in the world.” Do with that what you will.
The ability to go out and push our bodies to become stronger, healthier and more resilient to everything that life hits us with is an absolute luxury.
Next time you find yourself dreading a gym session or your weekly 5k run, remember how lucky you actually are to be able to do the things that you can. The human body is amazing, and if you have the ability to train it to some degree - you are already winning.
We don’t have to train. We get to train. There is a difference, and never has it been bigger.
