Local Notes: Wedding bells, hurling news and senior citizens outing

The Passage East hurlers have a busy time ahead
The death took place on July 7, at Waterford University Hospital, after a short illness of John Donnelly, Barrack Street, Passage East. He was 85, was of a very quiet disposition and held in the highest esteem by all in his community.
John worked in Dunmore East in his early years with Paddy O'Toole, a fish merchant and others also, and then went to Waterford Harbour Commissioners and did a short term in later years on the Dredger, 'Portlairge'. He was also a firm believer in a fair day's work for a fair day's pay.
John played hurling with the Passage Club and when talks of the club being revived he played in a match between Passage and Cheekpoint /Faithlegg in Geneva Barracks on July 6, 1960, which set the seeds for what was decided later that year with the formation of the club Suir Rovers, which a few years later changed to Passage. He played with club until around 1967. His remains reposed in Tom Hennessy’s Funeral Home, Johnstown, on Friday, July 12, and on Saturday the funeral cortége stopped at John’s house in Barrack Street, Passage East en-route to St. John The Baptist Church, Crooke for his Requiem Mass on arrival.
The Mass was celebrated by Rev Fr Prian Power PP, Kilsheelan, former PP in Crooke, in the presence of a large congregation. As Mass began symbols of his life were brought up by family members and relations: Paul Duffin - with a photo of the Dredger 'Portlairge'; Katie Rowe - a photo of Passage East Hurling team 1960, and Laura Buckley with a tidal schedule. All the readings and gifts brought up were by John's relations.
The first and second readings were given by Sophie Rowe and Conor Twomey, the Prayers of the Faithful by April Roche, Eimear Mellor, Katie Rowe and offertory items were brought up by Aoife Twomey and Michael Rowe. Crooke Church Choir, led by organist Paudie Creedon, supplied the hymns and music.
In his homily Fr Power covered the life of John and mentioned his love of his faith and described him as a rare breed at the moment, as he was a regular at daily mass as well as Sunday mass.
His remains were then brought to Crooke Cemetery passing Passage Hurling Club Grounds on the way where flags flew at half mast as a mark of respect for a former player of the club who played in the early years. Rev Fr Power recited the final prayers at the graveside assisted by the present PP in Crooke, Rev Fr PJ Breen.
Finally his nephew, Seán Twomey on his phone over the PA, played the 'Lifeboat Song', by Liam Clancy in the presence of a silent crowd; a fitting farewell to John. Predeceased by his parents Jack and Mary Ann, sisters Finola, Maeve, Pauline and Veronica, he is survived by his sister Maisie and his brother Dick, nieces, nephews, extended family neighbours and many friends.
The death took place on July 11, at UHW in the Oak Ward, of Mr Paddy Fahy, formerly proprietor of the Farleigh, Passage East and Mallow Co. Cork.
Paddy was predeceased by his parents and his sister Mary. He is survived by his wife Margaret, children, Onara, John, Jannet and Pat, his sisters Anne and Kathleen, brothers-in-law Terry and Charlie, sister-in-law Gabrielle, sons-in-law Eddie and Niall, daughters-in-law Shauna and Lorraine; his 10 adored grandchildren, extended family, neighbours and friends. Paddy's remains were laid to rest in St Mary’s Cemetery, Ballygunner after Requiem Mass on Sunday in St Joseph’s and Benildus Church. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam.
Mass Times in Crooke and Faithlegg for the coming week are comprised of: Thursday, July 25 - Crooke (10am); Saturday, July 27 - Faithlegg (6.30pm); Sunday Vigil, July 28 - Crooke (11.30am).
Passage East Senior Citizens are organising a bus trip to Kilkenny on Saturday next, July 27. The bus will leave Crooke at 10.15am, Passage at 10.30am and will pick up at The Woodlands Hotel soon after that. The bus will leave Kilkenny at 5pm to return home. There still may be a couple of seats left and contact any member of committee to find out about seat availability.
