Young actors are presenting 'Under Milk Wood', by Dylan Thomas

Rehearsals are underway for the Waterford Youth Arts annual Summer theatre project, which this year features Dylan Thomas’s play, ‘Under Milk Wood.’

Thirty local young actors, aged 14 to 19, are about to embark on the exciting six-week long journey, guided by the expertise of Jim Nolan. The project’s goal is to provide these young artists with an immersive, near-professional theatre experience.

Jim has previously directed productions such as ‘Romeo & Juliet’ in 2021, ‘The Crucible’ in 2014, and ‘Dark of the Moon’ in 2010 for WYA.

Collaborators for ‘Under Milk Wood’ include Ben Hennessy (set design), Natasha Everitt (movement direction), Éadaoin Walsh (music direction), Richard ‘Lippy’ Collins (lighting design), and stage manager Sinéad Hourigan.

'Under Milk Wood' offers a surreal, impressionistic glimpse into the lives of a fictional Welsh village over the course of 24 hours. Through poetic narration, audience members discover the dreams, desires, loves, and regrets of its inhabitants.

Originally commissioned by the BBC as a radio play, this timeless classic has seen numerous adaptations across radio, stage, and film. Show dates are August 14 to 17, at 8pm and the venue is Garter Lane.
