WATCH: Rehearsals for 'Under Milk Wood' which is being staged in Waterford's Garter Lane

The preparations have been done and everything is in place for the curtain to rise this evening, Wednesday, August 14, on Waterford Youth Arts (WYA) production of ‘Under Milk Wood’.
The show will run in Garter Lane theatre until Saturday, August 17.
The production of ‘Under Milk Wood’, by Dylan Thomas, is directed by Jim Nolan and is WYA’s summer project for this year.
It features a cast of 32 youths aged between 14 and 19. The story takes the form of an emotive and hilarious account of a spring day in the fictional Welsh seaside village of Llareggub.

A spokesperson for WYA told Waterford News & Star: “We learn of the inhabitants' dreams and desires, their loves and regrets.” The show was also a long time coming for Jim Nolan, who, a trip to Wales in the 1990’s and then reading the play, fell in love with ‘Under Milk Wood’.
“Returning to Ireland, I read and fell in love with the play, but an ambition to produce it at Red Kettle, where I was then Artistic Director, was predictably compromised by the resources required to mount a large-scale professional production,” said Jim.
“All good things sometimes do come to those who wait however, and I am grateful to Ollie and Cathy and all the team at WYA for the opportunity to realise an ambition that has lain dormant in the more than 30 years since my visit to Laugharne,” he added.
Ben Hennessy’s set design, with assistance from Martin Hourigan and Alan Flynn, will transport the audience to the fictional Welsh village, while Natasha Everitt, on movement and Éadaoín Breathnach, on music direction, will ensure the overall experience of the audience is enhanced to maximum effect.
Richard ‘Lippy’ Collins took care of lighting design while Rita Drohan oversaw the costumes. The production’s stage manager is Sinéad Hourigan and the Assistant Director is Shane Flynn.
Together, they breathe life into Dylan Thomas’s poetic exploration of 24 hours where dreams intertwine, love blooms, and regrets linger.
