Gilbert O'Sullivan

Earlier this year, Gilbert O'Sullivan announced to the Waterford News & Star that a show in Waterford was on the agenda for 2024.

He said: “That’s the plan, it has to be. We are going to be doing two shows in Cork, two nights in Dublin in September and the plan is to come to Waterford, so that will happen.”

An initial two gig return was subsequently announced last week by Theatre Royal, for December 9 and 10.

Tickets went on sale on Thursday May 30 with high demand expected. Theatre Royal urged those interested to buy early to avoid disappointment.

On Thursday morning, fans eagerly joined an online queue to secure tickets, excited to see the Waterford native perform in his hometown.

Tickets sold out in under 20 minutes. With countless disappointed fans missing out, calls for a further date began to circulate online.

An additional gig was subsequently announced for November 28. Once again sales rocketed and Theatre Royal revealed that additional gigs were agreed with Gilbert for November 26 and 29.

Tickets for all five shows are now sold out.

O’Sullivan was recently granted the Freedom of Waterford, in recognition of his contribution to global popular culture through his music.

During the acceptance ceremony, he was described as “a signal composer and performer from Waterford roots who has made an indelible mark on the world of modern music”.

The Cork Road native’s career has spanned 50 years. His first single success, ‘Nothing Rhymed’, was released in 1970 and almost overnight it achieved Top 10 status in the UK and Europe.

He has achieved Top 10 singles and Number 1’s around the world, including the classic ‘Alone Again (Naturally)’, which topped the US charts and earned him three Grammy nominations.
