Lonergan SSE Airtricity Premier Division Player of the Month for July

Tommy Lonergan has been rewarded for his continued superb displays for Waterford by being named the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division Player of the Month for July.

The in-form striker, who is the Premier Division's leading scorer with 14 goals, was named June's winner of the WLR Granville Waterford Sport Award and carried those performances into July, earning national recognition.

The Meath native began the month with a brace at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium as the Blues recorded a sensational victory over Derry City, just days after rejecting a six-figure bid from the Candystripes for his services.

Lonergan also assisted Jorgen Voilas for Waterford's fourth goal in that game, which formed part of a seven-match unbeaten run under new manager Graham Coughlan.

Waterford were staring relegation in the face when Coughlan stepped into the role following the departure of Jon Daly, but their season has been transformed since then, with Lonergan leading the charge.

He has continued that impressive run into August, scoring the winner against Shelbourne before opening the scoring in a 3-1 victory over Bohemians a week later.

Lonergan and Waterford will look to maintain their resurgence as they bid for a place in the Club Orange FAI Cup quarter-finals when Athlone Town visit the RSC on Friday evening.
