This was really top class display by a very skilful Carrick United side in a very entertaining Michael ‘Dixie’ Power Cup Under 11D Cup final at Gruan Park on Monday last.

On the day Carrick just had too much for a very hard working Ferrybank squad. Carrick raced into a four goal first-half lead and from that point there was no way back for the team from across the Suir.

FOUR GOALS IN 24 MINUTES

It was Carrick United who were out of the traps first as they went on the attack from the minute referee Paddy Lawlor blew his whistle to start the game.

In the seond minute striker Odhran Power played the ball behind the Ferrybank back four, Ben Drohan took the ball past his marker but his right foot shot wide just wide of the far post.

On six minutes Carrick opened the scoring. Kai Walsh made a clever run past two Ferrybank defenders and he picked up a pass from Cian Mullins before shooting past the advancing Ben O’Brien.

On 10 minutes it was 2-0. Tommy Walsh was fouled on the edge of the box and up stepped Theo Coady to hammer a right foot piledriver into the roof of the net past the diving Ben O’Brien.

Ferrybank responded well with Taylor Magee winning a tackle in midfield before driving for goal but her shot on the run forced a good save from Carrick keeper Jayden Condron.

However on 13 minutes Carrick found the net again for goal number three. Carrick won another free-kick 20 yards from goal and up stepped Theo Coady to fire into the net off the near post for his second goal of the game.

Carrick had a chance to go further ahead on 16 minutes when Kai Walsh was fouled in the box. The Carrick winger took the spot-kick himself but he pulled this one wide of the far post.

On 24 minutes before a minute before halftime Carrick scored again, team captain Ollie Walsh showed his class with a first time pass to Cian Mullins and his cross found Saba Gvetadze who finished in style.

CREDIT TO FERRYBANK

To their credit Ferrybank never gave up the fight in the second-half. They forced Carrick keeper Jayden Condron into a couple of good saves. On 35 minutes Charlie McLoughlin cut in from the left but the keeper dived low to save.

Minutes later Brooklyn Chin played in Darragh Kelly but again Condron was equal to the task. John Moran then had a chance for Ferrybank but his near post effort flew just wide. Carrick regained their composure and were soon back on the attack.

On 57 minutes Carrick went five up. Alfie Finn picked up the ball wide on the right and weaved his way into the box before planting a powerful shot low into the far corner of the net. Ferrybank pulled back a goal just before the final whistle, Darragh Fagan showed a neat touch before shooting home from close range.
