Seamus Ó Droma award presented to Jimmy Costin's family

The Seamus O'Droma award is presented by last year's recipient of the award Fr Michael Enright ,included are members of the O';Droma family Mary Rose, Darren and Fiona and members of the Costin Family Jamie, Niall, Nicola and Orla.

At a packed Halla Pobail na Rinne, following the 31 st edition of Rás na Rinne, this year’s Seamus Ó Droma Award was posthumously presented to Jimmy Costin. In memory of Seamus, who passed away in March of last year, the Ó Droma family launched the inaugural Seamus Ó Droma Award and presented it for the first time last year to Fr. Michael Enright.

And it was indeed Fr. Michael who had the honour of bestowing the beautiful Eamonn Terry-designed crystal trophy to Jamie Costin, on behalf of Muintir Uí Chositín. As previously stated, the idea behind the award is that it would be presented to an individual, a group, an organisation, the athletics stalwart, the first-timer, the first home, the last home, the youngest, the oldest- basically the recipient(s) will have made a positive contribution towards running in any of its various forms keeping with how Seamus himself would have viewed the sport, always available to give helpful advice when needed.

And Jimmy Costin was the epitome of the above. With a collection of photographs, old and new, newspaper clippings etc. as far back as the early 1960’s, Darren Ó Droma gave an account of the history of athletics in the An Rinn area, from the establishment of St. Nicholas’s A.C., to the athletics career of Jimmy and his vital contribution to the formation Of Ring/Old Parish A.C. in the early 90’s and the important role of the Costin family to athletics in the area.
