Kate O'Connor holds second place in heptathlon

Kate O'Connor has got her European Athletics Championships campaign underway in Birmingham.

Earlier this morning, the world silver medallist ran a personal best time of 13.3 seconds in the 100-metre hurdles.

The Louth athlete was competing in the high jump this afternoon.

O'Connor also claimed a personal best in that event, as she cleared 1.86 metres.

She now sits in second place and is just one point off the lead.

The men's 4x400 metres relay team came sixth in their heat, and miss out on the final.

Andrew Coscoran has qualified for the men's 1,500-metre final. He took fourth in this afternoon's first round.

Newly-minted European champion Mark English says he still hasn't processed winning last night's 800-metre final.

The Donegal runner ran a time of 1.45.26 seconds to claim Ireland's first-ever European gold in a men's individual event.

Meanwhile, at the European Aquatics in Paris, Daniel Wiffen is through to tomorrow's final of the men's 1,500 metres freestyle.

The Olympic bronze medalist finished second in his heat this morning.

Grace Davison, and Danielle Hill are both through to tonight's semi-finals in the women's 100-metre backstroke.

Jack Cassin's seventh place in the men's 200-metres butterfly heats sees him through to the semis this evening.

Ellie McCartney and Ellen Walshe both came through heat two in the women's 200 metres individual medley this morning.
