GAA: Armagh overcome Derry, Westmeath defeat Cavan after extra-time thriller

Armagh are into round 2A of the All-Ireland football championship after defeating rivals Derry 1-18 to 1-13 in the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds.

Derry had the opening goal of the game after 16 minutes, but Armagh were able to take control of the first half, with Tiernan Kelly's goal three minutes later giving Lieran McGeeney's side a 1-16 to 1-2 lead after 19 minutes.

Two pointers from Oisín Conaty and Conor Turbitt helped the 2024 All-Ireland winners to a 1-9 to 1-3 lead.

Scores from Conor Doherty helped narrow the lead to three points with 15 minutes left, but a two-pointer from Blaine Hughes and further scores from Conaty helped Armagh advance.

 

Westmeath needed extra time to defeat Cavan 1-31 to 3-21 in Mullingar to advance to round 2A of the All-Ireland football championship

After winning the Leinster championship, Westmeath went into the game full of confidence.

They led 0-12 to 0-6 at the interval, with Brandon Kelly scoring three points in the first half.

Westmeath had stretched the lead out to nine points early in the second half, but a goal from Paddy Lynch helped reduce the lead to four points.

The Leinster champions looked like they would hold on for victory, but a goal from Paddy Meade brought Westmeath level in the 68th minute.

However, the drama was not over, as Matthew Whittaker's last-second point gave Westmeath the lead.

It was enough to secure victory, however, as a two-pointer from Conor Casey brought the game to extra-time.

In extra-time, Cavan were the stronger side, with Darragh Lovett scoring their third goal, and Paddy Lynch scoring two two-pointers.

Senan Baker and Ronan Wallace both scored two-pointers to bring Westmeath within two of Cavan.

Not to be denied, Westmeath scored their only goal through Kevin O'Sullivan, with John Heslin's two points securing victory.

Kerry were able to end Tyrone's dominance of the U20 All-Ireland football championship with a 0-21 to 1-10 win at Croke Park.

Gearóid White scored five points, with four points from Tómas Kennedy helping the Kingdom to victory.

New York overcame Tyrone's hurlers in the Nickey Rackard final - that finished 2-22 to 2-17.

Derry then defeated Kerry 3-24 to 3-19 in the Christy Ring Cup final.

Connor Melaugh scored 2-2 for Derry, while Shea Cassidy scored 1-4 to help them to victory.
