Donald Trump has hailed Harry Kane as a “great player” after the England captain sent Thomas Tuchel’s side through to the World Cup quarter-finals.
Kane converted a second-half penalty in England’s 3-2 win over Mexico at Estadio Azteca, his sixth goal of the tournament.
The Bayern Munich striker’s performance was recognised by the White House with the American president writing on social media: “Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player.”
Kane’s 60th-minute penalty proved decisive after Jude Bellingham scored twice in the space of 98 seconds before half-time.
Julian Quinones cut the deficit before the break and Raul Jimenez scored from the spot to make it 3-2, but England set up a quarter-final date with Norway despite having Jarell Quansah sent off after 54 minutes.
Kane, England’s record World Cup goalscorer, is one behind Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
England players celebrated by joining the fans in a rendition of ‘Wonderwall’, the Oasis hit which has become their World Cup anthem.
Kane had lost his voice after the game and struggled to speak in a post-match BBC interview, saying: “Unbelievable support. Speechless.
“My voice is gone. I’ve just been singing there. I can’t really talk.”
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher wrote on X: “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.”
